Commercial driver's license information
A valid Commerical Driver's License (CDL) is required if you plan to operate certain specialezed types of vehicles such as buses, heavy oversized vehicles, or vehciles that carry multiple passengers.
Based on the requirements set forth by Service Oklahoma, operating a school bus requires a Class B CDL with the following endorsements: School Bus, Passenger, and Air Brakes (Optional). For more details on vehicles requiring a CDL, you can visit the Service Oklahoma website here.
To obtain cdl:
- In order to obtain your Commerical Driver's License, you must first study the CDL Manual to prepare for the written exam. A copy of the CDL Manual can be obtained here. In addition to this, you will need the following documents for your written exam: Your primary ID, Valid Oklahoma Class D Driver License, Social Security number (physical card is not required), Proof of Oklahoma Residency, A DOT Medical Card (unless it is determined through Self Certification that you are exempt). Prepare for this BEFORE you go to your appointment!
- You will need the to take the following four written tests: General Knowledge (Required), School Bus (Required), Passenger (Required), Air Brakes (Optional-Only required if you will be driving a school buses equipped with air brake systems).
- Take the vision and written test at a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office.
- Get your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP). This is issued once you have successfully completed and passed the necessary written tests for the type of license you are trying to obtain.
- Take the CDL Drive Test after holding your CLP for a minimum of 14 days.
